Echoes of the car boot sale 2015 organised by the Friends of Jeanne Antide
in favour of the missions run by the Sisters of Charity
As it happens yearly, the car boot sale organised by the Friends of Jeanne-Antide in favour of the Missions of the Congregation was held during the last weekend of summer - Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th September 2015 – in the park of St. James’ Community at St. Ferjeux, 9 rue de la Basilique, Besançon.
The reception of gifts, the sorting out and the labelling of the objects mobilize friends and sisters alike during the whole year. As soon as the administrative authorisations are granted, a call to kind volunteers is sent, those who will be in charge of the stands are appointed, the posters are distributed, the tables, the benches and the shelters are ordered.
Already on Friday, the thirty folding tents « Vitabris » gratuitously offered, are set up in record time. More than fifty persons, religious and lay friends, busily fill the stands for the following day.
At 1.00 pm on Saturday and at 11.00 am on Sunday, the clients hasten in front of the park gates to be the first to visit the stands, or to go directly to buy the waffles whose fragrance fills the area. More than ten stands offer haberdashery, underwear, lace, handbags, suitcases, furniture, books, crockery, antiquities, jewellery, toys, vases, lamps and a quantity of unclassifiable objects in the bric-a-brac.
The car boot sale is meant to make known the activities of the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity and of the Association of the Friends of Jeanne Antide. For this reason, two stands have been installed close to the young and less young persons who were available to the public to inform and to distribute magazines and leaflets.
Beyond this material aspect which is certainly important, what characterises this car boot sale, is the enthusiasm which makes each one participate in this supportive work. Religious and friends, work together, they discover their business skills …, « the small streams form big rivers… ».The amount collected in 2014 was enough to finance a part of the meals distributed by the Soup Kitchens of Besançon and Nice, to help the young persons in formation and to supply the needs of the Thouret Foundation on facing urgent cases.
This was the eleventh car boot sale which will permit to continue to help the destitute. The sum of money distributed since 2005 amounts to around €200.000.
Our thanks go to the religious of the Congregation, to the benefactors and the volunteers who give a lot of their time for the success of these days where conviviality rhymes with solidarity.
