THE ACADEMIC CONFERENCE aims to provide an in-depth reflection on the figure of Saint Jeanne-Antide Thouret and her social, religious and cultural impact in Naples during the French Decade and the Restoration, highlighting her pioneering role and her contribution to the development of new models of education and social care.

“Saint Jeanne-Antide Thouret.

A Feminist Revolution in Early 19th-Century Naples”,

The proceedings will open with official addresses by Maria Rosa Muscarella, Superior General of the Sisters of Charity of Saint Jeanne Antide Thouret, and by Lisa Moutoumalaya, Consul General of France and representative of the Institut Français Grenoble.

The conference will be divided into two sessions.

The first session, coordinated by Renata De Lorenzo (Neapolitan Society of National History), will provide a historical and cultural overview of Naples between the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Among the presentations: The Profile of Sister Giovanna Antida, a reading by Angelo Belgiovine on the nun’s profile, taken from a letter by Archbishop Mons. Domenico Narni Mancinelli; a paper by Anna Maria Rao (University of Naples Federico II) on the French Decade, entitled Beautiful only when viewed from afar; and a presentation by Adriana Valerio (Historian and Theologian) on Religious life between the Decade and the Restoration.

The second session, coordinated by Elisa Novi Chavarria (University of Molise), will explore Mother Thouret’s time in Naples and the educational and cultural context of the period. Speakers will include Sister Wandamaria Clerici (President of the OPCRC Foundation) on The Neapolitan Years of Giovanna Antida Thouret. From the Free County to the heart of a metropolis; Maria Rascaglia (National Library of Naples) on Education in Naples in the time of Giovanna Antida; and Maria Gabriella Mansi (National Library of Naples) on The image of Giovanna Antida in publications between the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The conclusions will bring to a close a day of study intended not only as a commemorative event, but as an opportunity for a critical re-examination of the role of women in history and social transformation.
