FORMATION of the Sisters of Charity

From its very beginnings, our Congregation has recognized the importance of nurturing the formative dimension, cultivating every aspect of it.

Mother Thouret’s first companions had lived through their youth during the French Revolution. From this arose Saint Jeanne Antide’s primary commitment to accompany them on a journey that would allow them to welcome and internalize God’s love, recognize Christ in the poor they were called to serve, and allow themselves to be challenged by them.

Today, the Congregation emphasizes the essential nature of a lifelong formation journey that consists of an integral formation process, in which spiritual and human formation proceed together in a process of integration and transformation.

This path of continuous growth requires the development of formative programs that prioritize the integral formation of the person in all aspects, particularly in their capacity to give of themselves, evangelize, promote the gift of fraternal life, and contribute to its growth.

Formation consists of two phases:

INITIAL FORMATION

Initial formation corresponds to the postulancy, novitiate, and juniorate: prior to perpetual profession, it prepares the young woman to become fully a Sister of Charity, allowing herself to be shaped by the Love of Christ lived out in daily life, in community life, and in mission.

ONGOING FORMATION

Ongoing formation, following perpetual profession, helps the religious sister to integrate her creativity with fidelity, since the Christian and religious vocation requires dynamic growth and fidelity in the concrete circumstances of life.

INITIAL FORMATION

The Initial Formation Laboratory works directly with the General Government and the Provincial Governments and, with the collaboration of various formators, reaches the sisters in all territories.

The Laboratory aims to increasingly foster a spirit of family through the implementation of common guidelines in initial formation and transformative programs, in accordance with the requests of the Acts of the 2021 General Chapter. To this end, it organizes online and in-person meetings with formators and formation programs for young sisters tailored to their various stages of formation.

In this way, through these initiatives, it offers its contribution—in collaboration with all local communities—to a continuous review and an indispensable deepening of the formation process in today’s world, aware that this challenge requires the collaboration of all, in a spirit of ongoing discernment, listening to the Spirit and the Church.

INITIAL FORMATION

The Ongoing Formation Workshop collaborates directly with the General Government and the Provincial Governments, through which it reaches the sisters in various territories, often with the assistance of territorial commissions.

The Office reaches out to the sisters by promoting online meetings on topics related to formation, the charism, apostolic life, and the life of the Church, thus offering common points for personal and communal reflection and deeper understanding.

It pays particular attention to the younger members of the professed sisters and organizes in-depth courses on the Charism and the Congregation, as well as on the Foundress and other Saints.

The meetings are led by young sisters who have participated in the School of the Charism and who are committed to deepening their charismatic research and presenting it to the younger professed sisters, thereby learning, at the same time, the art of research and communication.
