On the occasion of International Women’s Day 2026, the award to Sister Adele was presented by Dr Lydia Abela, wife of the Prime Minister of Malta, during a ceremony dedicated to celebrating women who, through their commitment and dedication, have made a significant contribution to society.

It was a moment of great pride as Sr Adele Baldacchino was honoured with the Mara (Woman) – Lifetime Achievement Award during the third edition of the Mara Awards, presented by Dr Lydia Abela, spouse of the Prime Minister of Malta, during a ceremony celebrating women whose work and dedication have made a meaningful contribution to society.
During the event, thirteen other women were also recognised for their achievements in a variety of fields. Awards were presented in categories such as Social Impact, Champion in Sports, and Remarkable Woman, highlighting the many ways in which women continue to shape and enrich Maltese society.

At 87 years of age, Sr Adele remains a powerful witness of compassion and dedication. For 70 years, she has served faithfully as a Sister of Charity of St Jeanne Antide Thouret, touching the lives of countless people through her quiet yet profound presence.
She is especially known for her long-standing commitment to inmates at the Corradino Correctional Facility. For many years she has visited the prison regularly, offering encouragement, spiritual support, and a compassionate listening ear to prisoners and their families. Her loving and constant presence has earned her the affectionate title “the prisoners’ mum.”
Through her faith, generosity, and tireless dedication to those on the margins, Sr Adele has brought hope, dignity, and mercy to many who have crossed her path.
Those who know Sr Adele often hear her repeat the simple motto that guides her life:
“Love and passion are the things that drive you to do things.”
At the heart of this conviction lies her deep belief that everything is done for His glory. This spirit has shaped her lifelong service and continues to inspire all those who encounter her.

The Mara – Lifetime Achievement Award recognises not only the many years of generous service Sr Adele has given, but also the lasting impact of her presence among those most in need of compassion and encouragement.
