Arrival: January 4, 1980
Origins
At the request of the Bishop of the Diocese of Sintang, the Provincial Superior of La Roche, Sr. M. Humbeline, sent 5 sisters (2 Swiss and 3 Italian) to Kalimantan (Borneo), Indonesia.
Sr. Jean Bernard, responsible for the community, together with Sr. M. Gabriel, Sr. Leonarda, Sr. Jean Paul and Sr. Maddalena were thus on a huge island with very few priests and Sisters, almost all concentrated in important centres. The bishop had asked that we take care of evangelisation in the most remote villages where there were no comforts, no markets, no pharmacies, no telephones and even less daily Mass.
From the beginning, our main activity was evangelization and catechesis, as well as active participation in all the activities of the village (building roads, transporting wood…). Over the years, the community extended its mission to the remote areas of the village and multiplied activities that were not limited to the proclamation of the Gospel but also provided medical and nursing care, hygiene training, promotion of women and extra-curricular activities with children.
It was only after many years that the first vocations arrived, which led us to open a novitiate in the city to ensure an adequate theological and spiritual formation.
Today
The main services in which the Sisters are involved:
In a few years, thanks to the growth of the community, our presence has been able to multiply in other islands, today we have 6 communities in which we work:
- in the educational activity with a nursery school, some Sisters teach in diocesan schools
- in a social project which has been taking in orphans for several years and which still follows a flourishing rubber culture in collaboration with the inhabitants
- in the activity of evangelization which always remains a priority in their mission
